How DNT Network Connects Trainees with Mentors: A Guided Interview Experience

At DNT Network, we believe that learning doesn’t just happen through online modules—it grows through real human connection. That’s why we built our Mentorship Program, where trainees pursuing certifications such as Infant Sleep Consultant or IBCLC have the opportunity to connect with experienced professionals in the field.

Recently, we connected Leeann Gill, one of our Infant Sleep Consultant trainees from West Haven, CT, with not one but two established professionals: Desiree Baird, an Infant Sleep Consultant based in Washington with 8 years of experience, and another IBCLC mentor who has been supporting families through breastfeeding journeys for years.

Here’s how it works:

1. Warm Introduction

We personally introduce each mentee to their mentor via email. Instead of leaving trainees to cold outreach, we create a warm and welcoming entry point. In Leeann’s case, she was connected directly with Desiree, who shared her background and invited Leeann to schedule a call using her online calendar.

2. Guided Interview Conversation

The heart of the program is a 15–30 minute conversation between mentor and mentee. We encourage them to connect through Zoom, FaceTime, or whichever platform works best. To make the most of this time, we provide guided interview questions—designed to help trainees go beyond surface-level conversations. These prompts cover (but not limited to):

  • What it’s like to work as a full-time professional such as Infant Sleep Consultant, birth doula, or IBCLC.

  • How mentors built their careers and the steps they took to get there.

  • Common challenges they’ve faced and how they’ve overcome them.

  • Practical tips and advice for getting started in the field.

3. Reflection and Feedback

After the conversation, mentees complete a short interview critique form. This reflection helps them process what they learned and becomes part of their certification materials. As a thank-you, mentors also receive a gift card for their time and contribution to the community.

Why This Matters

For trainees like Leeann, these interviews bring the curriculum to life. Instead of only reading about the role, they get to hear first-hand what a day in the life looks like, what it takes to succeed, and how to navigate real-world challenges. For mentors like Desiree, it’s a chance to give back to the profession and help shape the next generation of consultants.

Why Join the Guided Interview Program?

Many of our students ask whether the mentorship program is worth joining. The answer is yes—if you’re looking for a chance to:

  • See the profession in action through the eyes of someone who’s living it daily.

  • Build confidence by practicing professional conversations.

  • Learn insider tips on growing a career as an Infant Sleep Consultant, doula, or any other related professions.

  • Expand your network with supportive mentors who understand the challenges and joys of this work.

Our mentorship program is optional, but for those who take part, it’s often one of the most valuable parts of their training journey. As Leeann’s story shows, it’s not just about certification—it’s about building relationships that inspire, guide, and prepare you for the path ahead.
